SEO Tips For Individuals and Small Businesses

The following tips are very general and just the basics of optimization practices. While many of these techniques are for the do-it-yourself type, some background knowledge is necessary to implement optimization techniques. In order to avoid a costly mistake in the optimization of your website, a professional should be consulted and/or research done before carrying out any of the techniques described.

  • Optimize all tags: title, heading, Meta, anchor, etc.
  • Make sure all urls are user and search-engine friendly.
  • Optimize navigation tools on your site.
  • Have a custom 404-error page.
  • Optimize anchor text.
  • Optimize your images.
  • Use robots.txt for content that should not been seen by search engines.
  • Create useful, relevant, and unique content for your site.

This last point is probably the most important one. Remember, keeping the consumer entertained, informed, and generally happy is your number one priority with your website. If you don’t write for the user first, then you shouldn’t write at all.

Now more than ever it is important to provide valuable content to the consumer. People have an abundance of choices and not enough time to explore them all. If you one to be one of the select few that gets followed, you must provide value first and foremost!

A few other key characteristics factor into a good website: keep it real, keep it relative, and keep it interesting.

How does one “keep it real”?

Well, don’t sound like a robot or try to make your consumer believe that there are no people on the other side of your website. Instead, remind them that there are “real” humans on the other side of that writing and let them get to know them.

How does one “keep it relative”?

Well, each page of your site should be focused on one or a few relevant topics. Don’t wander too far from the subject of these topics; otherwise, you’ll lose your readers interest.

How does one “keep it interesting”?

Well, don’t just reiterate useless information that you find elsewhere; instead, take information and streamline it or put it into terms that are easy to comprehend. Also, don’t be afraid to add some humor or some other likeable aspect of your personality into your writings.
